Step-by-Step

Step 1: Compatibility Checking

At the beginning of Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd Generation, you have to check the compatibility with your heating or cooling system. Generally, in the current market, average 95% heating or cooling devices are compatible with Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd Generation. Go here and check compatibility with HVAC wiring.

The procedure is quite easy and simple. All you have to get removed your existing thermostat to get confirmed about its wiring. Now go to compatibility widget and select the wires which got connected your thermostat.

N.B: Nothing to worry about losing its settings. Because it’s powered by the battery. So you can remove it easily without any hesitation.

Remember one thing, Nest learning thermostat is never compatible with any high voltage system like 120v or 240v.

By selecting your wired connection Nest Compatibility widget will show the compatibility result. It’s a good step to take a snap of your own wiring. It will help you to re-install your older one. Check if any small jumper cable is hidden between 2 connectors.

Step 2: Unboxing the brand new Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd Generation

Nest learning thermostat Premium package contains Nest Learning Thermostat, Welcome Guide, Installation Guide, Connector Base, Nest Screwdriver and Wall Screws, Trim Plate (Optional), Steel Plate (Optional), Optional Steel Plate Screws.

In the installation guide there are some wiring stickers which will be needed, so collect it.

Step 3: Switch off the Power before starting installation

Before starting the installation, it has to be ensured that your Power is disconnected. Also, confirm that your heating and cooling systems are disconnected from power. Or you can completely switch off your power from the circuit breaker box.

Step 4: Thermostat Wires Labeling

In this step, you have to get a full set of handy labels. It will help you to identify your thermostat wires are connected or disconnected.

Now, take stickers and then all the wires as they are attached according to the connectors. From the back plate of the thermostat, now disconnect wires.

Step 5: Backplate of the Old Thermostat Removing

After disconnecting wires, now open all screws off and remove the old thermostat back plate. Do not pull off any plaster while you are removing the backplate.

Step 6: Installing new backplate for Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd generation

Now install the new backplate observing the spirit level (bubble) that screws are in level on the wall. You can also use the optional trim plate to hide holes or destroyed paint during the old backplate removing.

All the screws are self-tapping. So, you won’t need drilling on the wall to set the screws. If you are setting it on a wood, you will have to make few hole by drilling. If needed, you can use some wall anchors for securing the screws. Remember, better backplate installation ensures beautiful installation of Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd generation.

Step 7: Reconnecting wires to New Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd Generation

When you have completed setting Nest Back Plate, now reconnect your new thermostat with wires according to its labels. Connecting wires are just simple.

You have to press down the button next to each and every connector then the slot in the wire and release the button. You will need like 1 cm wire without insulation to ensure a perfect connection.

Step 8: Connecting the Nest Learning Thermostat Display

Now it is the time for setting / connecting the Nest Learning Thermostat Display. This is also just simple. Hold the display and plug-in onto the back plate until it sounds a click. Just confirm before plug-in, hold the thermostat display exact on pin socket of the backplate.

Step 9: Switch back On the Power

After completion of the hardware installation, now you can switch back On the power. Once the power is on, your nest learning thermostat will switch on. Now Nest Learning Thermostat needs to be configured.

Step 10: Configuring the Nest Learning Thermostat

When your Nest Thermostat device with its back plate and the device is turned on, now configure the device within few simple steps. The first step is you have to select your language.

Secondly, connect the Nest device to your WiFi network. Use your network SSID and Password to connect the device to your Wireless Network.

In this level, it is confirmed that the device is online and now you can download any firmware updates.

In this level, you will be asked to set your location.

Here you have to put your postcode and after that, you will be asked to explain the type of family setup. Basically, most of the users use to select “Single-Family” when this system using at home. But for duplexes, apartments or any multiple dwellings used “Multi-Family“.

In this level you will be asked where your thermostat device is located, if you have installed multiple thermostat device, it will identify your each device by location.

Now you have to configure your heating and cooling settings. Here there are two options, Homeowner and Pro. If you are a Nest Pro, select “PRO” else select “HOMEOWNER”.

In the stage, your installed Nest device will show on the screen, which wires or equipment has been detected by the Nest device and which wire or equipment controls which function.

Now, a detected list of your heating and cooling system will be shown on your Nest thermostat screen.

In this level, the device will show the type of fuel your heating/ cooling systems are using.

Your nest device will ask, “What is the source for your heating? GAS, ELECTRIC, OIL, PROPANE(LP), GEOTHERMAL etc.” And also, will ask, “What type of heating do you have? FORCED AIR, IN-FLOOR RADIANT, RADIATORS, MORE INFO etc.”.

In this stage, you have to configure your temperature settings. The device will ask, How Nest Learning Thermostat Device will start working by cooling or heating your home (If you have air conditioning and heating device in your home).

Now set the lowest and highest temperature as you like your nest thermostat will heat or cool your house when you are away.

In this level, a system check will be performed which confirms heating and cooling your home by the nest thermostat in turn. Confirm the air vents/radiators are working fine, otherwise troubleshoot the issues.

Here the initial configuration of your Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd Generation is done. Now your thermostat device will create your daily schedule by learning your temperature preferences.

Step 11: Nest App downloading and Installation to Smartphone

You can control and manage your Nest Learning Thermostat device from anywhere by your smartphone. For that, just get the Nest App downloaded to your smartphone and install it. Now open up the app.

If you are using Nest app for the first time, you will have to sign-up for a Nest account. You can create the account using the Nest app or on the website of Nest.

Now you have to agree with the terms of service and then finally just verify your email address. You are there! Automatically you will be signed into the newly created Nest account. If you own a nest account, just sign into the nest app.

Nest app will ask you few question on you location related to your account.

Here provide proper information like Home name, Postal code, Country, and location.

Now go to your Nest Thermostat device and enter into the device menu by pressing the dial of the device. Now access to “Nest Account” from “Settings”. Create an “entry key” and pair your device with your “Nest Account”.

After generating the key, go to the “Nest App” to your smartphone and Tap on “Add”. Select the product type “Nest Thermostat”. Now pass the screens till you asked for the “Key”.

Now, by entering the “Key” you will be able to pair your Nest Learning Thermostat device with your Nest Account. Now you are all set up with your Nest device and Nest account and you can manage your Nest device from your smartphone.
