A phone user wanted to know, Why is my phone losing battery when I’m not using it? Why does my battery drain so fast when I’m not using it? As a basic reason, we can identify “Adaptive Brightness” is one of the Key culprits that cause phone idle drain. Whenever you have Automatic Brightness turned on, the phone will automatically adjust the brightness level based on the environment around it. That includes things like daylight, indoor light, or even just your surroundings in a dark room.

The second reason for idle phone battery power consumption can be some hidden items like a process or app running in the phone background. If you have a lot of background processes running, your phone will use more battery to keep them running. Background processes can include things like syncing with your cloud storage, tracking your location, or updating your apps. Sometimes it happens due to software and hardware malfunctioning or bad optimization. In this case, hardware and software companies should keep on their sharp eyes to keep the systems updated and bug-free.

What is normal battery drain per hour?

The amount of battery power used per hour varies greatly depending on how the phone is used, but a healthy battery should not lose more than 15% (20% at most) of its charge in one hour. If your battery seems to be draining at 30% or more in a single hour, regardless of what you do, then it’s time to replace it.

What is idle mode in Android?

When your phone is in idle mode, it has no network connectivity and apps are temporarily suspended. There are two ways that idle mode can be triggered: when a phone is unplugged and still (Doze mode), or when an app has not been opened in a significant amount of time (App Standby Mode). The idle mode in the android phone is Useful for conserving battery life when the phone is not being used and prevents notifications from being sent to the phone while it’s in idle mode.

Android: Settings > Battery > Tap the menu button to the upper-right > tap Battery Usage

iPhone: Settings > Battery > Tap one of the columns > Now check battery usage

Carrier Signal:

If you use a SIM card whose signal is very weak in your area, then your phone will be continuously searching for a better signal; which will hamper the battery performance even when it is in an idle state. The solution in this situation is you have to choose a SIM company whose signal is great in your area. Or you have to be sifted where your carrier signal is great.

Controlling Wi-Fi networks:

Wi-Fi function is a vital point of idle phone battery drainage. The phone switches to a Wi-Fi network if it detects no cellular signal. Even if you are not using the phone, it continuously searches for a Wi-Fi network to connect to in order to keep the idle battery alive. So, just keep Wi-Fi disabled on your phone when you do not need it. Both Bluetooth and WiFi may use a lot of battery power. If you do not need them, turn them off to save battery life.

Malfunctioned apps:

Temperature / Hot atmosphere:

High temperature is an important indication for smartphone battery drainage. A hot environment can quickly drain battery life. For any smartphone battery, 95-degree Fahrenheit or 35-degree centigrade is enough for battery drainage. This temperature would spoil the battery but can drain the battery in a very short time. But 45-degree centigrade will damage any smartphone battery. If you feel the phone is hot, switch off the phone for a certain time and keep it in a cool place for some time. Turn it on when its temperature is normal.

Controlling push notifications:

Active notifications play an important role in phone idle battery drain. Your phone’s apps have the capacity to send you notifications, and most of them request permission to do so on a regular basis. Your phone is always listening to all of the servers of the apps you have push notifications on, which can take a toll on your battery. To reduce phone idle battery usage, you must control push notifications i.e. disable all unnecessary push notifications.

Controlling location services:

Location services are very important for all of us nowadays. It can be used to find your way around or to get information about a certain place. Important or not, many apps use location services, which require good power from the battery. This function behaves the same as a push notification. So, you have to be alert to use the app or allow location service where essential only. Or keep location service turn off when you do not need it.

Controlling app syncing:

Especially email apps or cloud storage apps sync with the remote storage very frequently. To avoid this, you can control which apps sync with the remote storage and disable syncing for certain apps or increase the syncing intervals. It will reduce your phone’s idle battery usage.

Controlling display/ screen settings:

To reduce the phone battery usage, you must control the display settings with a great standard. You may reduce the display brightness, auto display off time, turn off the settings that wake the screen from notifications.
