Do you really know who your IT techs are as people? Maybe not. You might think they’re all just geeks who love technology, but they are all individuals with a life outside of work. Their interests, talents, and hobbies outside of work may surprise you.
When talking about an upcoming corporate party, someone from your IT team might reveal part of their life that you didn’t expect. For example, if you’re looking for a sommelier to serve wine, someone from IT might speak up and say they’ve worked as a trained sommelier in a former career. If that’s the case, you’ll have a great reason to put that outdoor bar to use at your party.
Other people from your IT team might be able to fill in as a DJ or help with decorations. Some might have connections to speakers or interesting people who can provide entertainment. You really never know until you start talking to your team about what you need.
2. Just being invited to a party makes people feel good
If you host corporate parties even once in a while, it’s a good idea to invite your IT tech support team, even if they never accept your invitations. Just the act of being invited makes people feel valued. If they want to decline your invitations ten times a year, let them, but don’t stop inviting them. You never know – one day they might actually show up to the party.

Hopefully, you invite everyone to your company gatherings no matter what, but if not, it’s important to remember that your IT tech team is the team that holds your company together. Although IT is basically the invisible company department, you can’t function without them. If your network goes down, your printer won’t connect, or you get hit with some kind of virus, they are the ones who will pick up the pieces and make everything functional again.
5. You’re hosting team building events
If you host corporate team building events that are designed to foster better teamwork and support, don’t forget your IT team. They may work behind the scenes, but they still regularly interact with your supervisors and employees. Don’t let them work in a silo. They need to be fully integrated socially into your team because that’s how they’ll create rapport with other teams, which will only make the overall experience better when they’re needed.
It’s possible your IT team won’t want to participate if there’s a sense of cliques in your company, so keep that in mind. If that’s a problem, you can use team building events to break that up and rework your company culture the way you see fit.

Unless your IT team is outsourced from overseas, they should be invited to your company events. Whether it’s a party or a team building event, having your tech team present will make them more visible to the rest of your company and they’ll feel appreciated.
