The World Wide Web has become a place where most people do business and socialize these days. The ultimate success in your social and occupational functioning now depends on whether you can find your way onto a browser’s homepage. The ways to make search engines work for you and how forum profile links can serve the purpose shall be the subject of this article.

How Search Engine Optimisation Works

A potential consumer of your products or services opens a browser, types the keywords in, and the search engine begins to select relevant articles. There will be about ten of them on the first page, and 98 percent of people will be satisfied with that selection. In extremely rare cases, they might have a look at the second page, but that’s the absolute maximum you can hope for.

So, Search Engine Optimisation refers to being shown on the first page of search results. Thus, your main objective is to move up the list so that your site is shown first. There are three key factors at play here:

  • The Popularity of Your Website

The search engine tries to assess your website’s popularity. In simple terms, it counts how many times users have opened your site or referred to it. A reference to your page from another site is called a link, and it becomes one of the most effective tools in gaining the search engine’s cooperation.

In other words, the search engine counts the links and visits to your page, and the more of them there are, the more popular you seem to be.

Another significant factor in this context is how long your visitors spend on your page each time. Obviously, the longer, the better. You might, for example, have tricked people into opening your page, but if it happens to be totally irrelevant or uninteresting, they will detect it within a few seconds and leave your site.

If that happens on your page a lot and regularly, it will be a red flag for the SEO and no good news for you.

  • Content Relevance

Search engines also try to determine how appropriate your content is, and there are two sides to this coin. The search engine tries to assess how relevant the content is to the keyword at stake and how suitable it is for the user. Let’s look at one example for each aspect.

If I search for some places to buy a good second-hand car, the search engine won’t show me flower shops, of course. But it will go further than that. If I search for a shop from an IP address in Los Angeles, it will first show me car dealers that operate in the city, or California, at least.

On the other hand, it may be a page with a name that sounds relevant, and there may even be all the necessary keywords in the text, but the page, in fact, advertises online casinos. That trick won’t work with most search engines.

In other words, your content ought to be truly relevant for the engine to move you up the list.

  • SPAM Assessment

The original meaning of the term SPAM is large volumes of undesired electronic messages that some messaging systems produce for various purposes. It’s very similar in SEO: you “bombard” the search engine with various links from all types of websites irrespective of their contextual or topical relevance, hoping some of them will affect the SE ranking. That is one way to draw attention to your site, although not the best one you can think of.

An alternative spamming strategy is to bombard the search engine with relevant keywords. If the word ‘car’ is required, you try to use it 200 times in your content, hoping it will work.

In both cases, numerous SEO mechanisms have been developed to detect such strategies and eliminate you from the list.

Implications for Effective Self-Advertising

Understanding the ways SEO operates, it’s easy enough to figure out how to make it work for you.

1. Find an optimal niche for your products, services, or whatever it might be that you would like to offer. Then start building links to your website to increase your site’s popularity. There are some techniques you could use to do that effectively, which fall outside the scope of this article.

Your ultimate purpose in the context of search engine optimization is to increase the traffic of visitors to your pages.

2. Become more active on social media and forums. A forum is a site where people meet online to exchange relevant information on a subject of their common interest. That’s why search engines find forum references particularly significant. Links from active profiles become an excellent way to test how appropriate and popular your content really is.

By building links from social forums, you make quantum leaps toward the first page.

3. You might succeed in attracting people to your site, but it’s no use if they only spend a few seconds on it. You want them to visit your page often, stay there for as long as possible, and recommend it to their friends afterward.

And the only way to achieve that is to offer truly relevant content and present it in an interesting manner.

4. And above all, never spam! It simply doesn’t work, and there are two reasons for that.

For one thing, most search engines are smart enough to detect spamming, and your chances of getting to the first page will decrease drastically.

Apart from that, your ultimate purpose is to offer something to somebody. The only reason to use all these strategies is to get a chance to sell something, offer some service, or let some people read your content.

Now, you could, in theory, spam the Web with your links or create a humongous number of profiles to backlink to your page, but who will be getting what from you if you end up on the homepage in the cloud of fake profiles around you?

Final Word

Now that you know how search engine optimization works, you might want to start developing your own self-advertising strategy and learn more about forum profile links. You can find relevant information on the internet and decide how to apply it in your particular case to win the World Wide Battle for the Homepage.
