Li-Fi Technology – History
Li-Fi Technology is the latest invention In the Wireless. In the era of technology, every day it updates to the new one. Just a few years back Wi-Fi was invented. In 1991, Wi-Fi was invented by NCR Corporation with AT&T. Just from 1991 to current time, the whole world is habituated with the Wi-Fi Technology very much. Li-Fi Technology is a name of new wireless technology.
In the meantime, a new wireless technology called ‘Li-Fi’ which is 100 times faster than Wi-Fi has been invented. The abbreviation of ‘Li-Fi Technology is “Light-Fidelity.” ‘Li-Fi’ was invented by Harald Haas. He is from the University of Edinburg, England. Mr. Harald Haas provided a Global Talk in 2012 about ‘Li-Fi’ at TED conference. pureLiFi has founded by Haas, where you can learn Li-Fi elaborately. To transmit data, it uses Visible Light Communication (VLC) instead of radio frequency. This technology works on the LED (Light Emitting Diode) bulb. The scientist of ‘Li-Fi’ states that ‘Li-Fi’ works on a 1 Watt LED bulb can connect 4 PC’s to the internet. There are Micro Chips used along with LED’s, that can increase the speed up to 150Mbps. The theoretical speed of ‘Li-Fi’ is 224 Gigabits/sec, The BBC Reported. In testing & trialing in offices and industrial environment in Estonia, Tallinn; Scientists reported that they could achieve up to 1GBps that might be a hundred times faster than the highest speed of Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi equipment is costly and low in efficiency. But Li-Fi Technology means, light is available, the internet is available. Everywhere light setup is already done and now time to use light for faster internet.
How Li-Fi functions
Li-Fi uses the same protocols as the RF-band 802.11 protocols with this technology transfers signals in the Binary method as ‘0’ and ‘1’. ‘1’ plays the role for ON state, and ‘0’ plays the role for OFF state. A Micro-Chip plays a great role to control switching ON and OFF.
Let’s have an example to the function of ‘Li-Fi.’ When an LED flashes from signal sending end and sends signals; a Photo Detector receives signals on the other receiving end. In this process, light flash sends signals and photodetector to detect them as On or OFF. By flashing the light in multiple manners would create a message and enable the data to travel. This is how the ‘Li-Fi’ technology functions.
Pros and Cons
Pros of ‘Li-Fi’ Wireless Technology
i. It opened the internet connectivity where the optical fiber is not easy to extend.
ii. Provides connectivity where light is available, even in the street.
iii. When it creates a bridge of the network, all the lights of your building will act as ‘Li-Fi’ source.
iv. Around 100 times faster than Wi-Fi.
Cons of ‘Li-Fi’ Wireless Technology
i. ‘Li-Fi’ technology does not pass through walls. It means no light, no connectivity.
ii. It is limited to a short distance to transmit data.
iii. ‘Li-Fi’ does not work under the direct sunlight, since any light signals wash out by the overpowering sunlight.
Nevertheless, ‘Li-Fi’ is a great invention & it might be a useful system of technology in specific use if it goes mainstream.
